Cover imageThis website is designed to accompany German Phonetics and Phonology: Theory and Practice by Mary Grantham O’Brien and Sarah M. B. Fagan.

The book combines theory and practice to provide students with an introduction to the phonetics and phonology of German as well as exercises and activities designed to help them produce more accurate and comprehensible German speech. It covers a broad range of topics, from the pronunciation of individual sounds, the assignment of word stress, and intonation, to the analysis of one’s own speech, historical developments, and regional variation.

The main components of this website are the recordings to accompany chapters 8–14, recordings of the consonant and vowel sounds of German to accompany Appendix A, the Praat guide, and instructor answer keys.
