Chapter 2: Thomas Jefferson Writes a Letter, paragraph 48

I think this is the first mention of computer programs. I was wondering earlier at the process of patenting where someone has to accurately describe their invention to get a patent. I was wondering earlier why that wouldn’t mean that the source code for a program would have to be included to get a patent, but I see now they fall under authorship not invention. But in a closed source program how can they copyright source code that no one ever sees? Or if they’re the author of the binary file, It”d be like publishing an encrypted book.
