[i] Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Smirnov. Born in 1904, he joined the VKP in 1928. Between 1930 and 1 June 1937, he worked in the EC KIM apparatus as a member of the Presidium of the International Children’s Bureau, head of the Cadres Sector, and as head of the Secret Department. On 1 June 1937, he was named deputy head of the ECCI’s Communications Department. After his arrest on 9 October 1937, he was expelled from the party as “the enemy of the party and the people,” and later repressed.
[ii] Agnessa Danilovna Dobrovolskaia. Born in 1895, she joined the RKP(b) in 1919. After 18 October 1924, she worked in the ECCI apparatus as a typist in the Press Department, technical secretary in the Polish-PriBaltic and the Balkan Lendersecretariats, and after 1 May 1937, as an analyst in the Secretariat of M. Moskvin. After she was arrested, she was expelled from the VKP on 27 May 1937, as “the enemy of the people,” and later repressed.
[iii] Alida Gansovna Alass. Born in 1900, she joined the VKP in 1929. In 1930-1934, she worked in the ECCI apparatus archives, and later in the Estonian section. After her arrest, she was expelled from the party, on 28 November 1937, as “the enemy of the party and the people,” and repressed.
[iv] Mikhail Efimovich Kashin. Born in 1904, he joined the VKP in 1926. After 27 October 1928, he worked as a cipher clerk in the ECCI’s OMS. He was arrested and, on 9 October 1937, expelled from the party as “the enemy of the party and the people,” and later repressed.
[v] Ervand Ovanesovich Orbeliani. He worked on the journal Kommunistichesky Internatsional. After his arrest, he was expelled from the VKP on 17 September 1937, and later repressed.
[vi] Karl Tenisovich Tetsen. Born in 1894, he joined the VKP in 1924. After 1921, he worked in the ECCI apparatus as a bursar in the Administration of Affairs. He was arrested and, on 31 March 1938, was expelled from the VKP as “the enemy of the party and the people,” and later repressed.
[vii] Fred – alias of Manfred Stern.
[viii] Elena Osipovna Valter. Born in 1898, she joined the RKP(b) in 1919. She worked in the ECCI apparatus after 1931. After 1934, she was the secretary in the Dimitrov’s Secretariat. On 18 October 1938, she was arrested. On 19 October 1938, she was expelled from the VKP as “the enemy of the party and the people.” The NKVD Special Council sentenced her, on 17 January 1940, to 3 years in exile in the Krasnoiarsk region. See “The Case of Elena O. Valter” in chapter 7.
[ix] Albert Muller (real name – Georg Brueckmann) (1903-1942). Born in Berlin, he joined the CPG in 1923. In 1931, he emigrated to the USSR, where he worked as a political analyst in the ECCI apparatus, and as head of the German sector in the Cadres Department. On 29 June 1938, he was arrested. On 5 July, he was expelled from the party as “the enemy of the party and the people.” On 7 April 1941, the NKVD Special Council sentenced him to eight years in prison. He died in the camp.
[x] David Gavrilovich Lipmanov (1902-1937). A member of the VKP from 1928, he worked in the Communications Department of the ECCI. On 1 October 1937, he was fired and, on 5 October, arrested. On 19 November, he was expelled from the VKP as “the enemy of the party and the people.” On 25 December, he was sentenced to be shot.

[xii] Ludwika Jankowska (real name – Luba Kowienska) (1901-1978). A member of the CPP from 1921, she was considered VKP member from 1921. In 1924-25, 1933-34, and 1935-37, she was a member of the Secretariat of the CC CPWB. In 1936, she worked in the CPWB delegation in Minsk and Moscow. On 8 December 1937, she was arrested and, on 14 October 1937, she was expelled from the VKP as “the enemy of the party and the people.” On 22 November 1937, the NKVD Special Council sentenced her to eight years in prison. On 3 January 1945, the NKVD Special Council resolved to release her from prison before the end of her term. On 15 January 1945, she left for Poland. Between 1948 and 1967, she was a member of the CC of the Polish United Workers Party.
[xiii] Anna Karlovna Yanson. A member of the Bolshevik party from 1904, she was arrested by the NKVD and, on 19 February 1938, expelled from the party as “the enemy of the party and the people,” and repressed.
[xiv] Berngard Bartels (1890-1937). A member of the RKP(b) from 1918, he worked in 1932-1937 as a translator in the Translations Department (Bureau), and later in the German section of the ECCI. On 3 July 1937, he was expelled from the VKP(b). On 3 August, he was arrested and, on 3 December, sentenced to be shot.
[xv] Jan Borowski (real name – Ludwik Komorowski) (1890-1937). A member of the SDPKPil and the RSDRP from 1906, he was secretary of the CPP’s delegation in the ECCI between 1934 and 17 July 1937. On 7 October 1937, he was arrested. On 22 December 1937, the NKVD of the USSR and the Procurator of the USSR sentenced him to be shot.
[xvi] Irina Gartmann (maiden name – Baum; married name – Benz) (1899-1937). Born in Poland, she joined the CPG in 1924, and the VKP in 1930. Between February 1931 and July 1937, she worked in the ECCI apparatus in the Translations Department, and later in the Communications Department as a cipher clerk. On 26 August 1937, she was expelled from the VKP. On 2 September, she was arrested. She was sentenced to capital punishment and shot on 1 November.
[xvii] Rudolf Yanovich Salna. Born in 1892, he was considered member of the RSDRP(b) from 1911. He was a member of the CC of the CPLat from 1921. Between May 1932 and October 1937, he worked as an assistant to Secretary of the Latvian section of the ECCI. On 22 October 1937, he was expelled from the VKP. He was arrested on 28 November, and later repressed.
[xviii] Esther Schwarzstein. Born in 1889, she joined the American Socialist Party in 1917, and, in 1919, the CP USA. Between 1920 and 1922, she was a member of the CP of Romania. On 29 November 1937, she was expelled from the VKP, and later arrested.
[xix] Lew Zmijewski (real name – Leon Owsianko). Born in 1910, he joined the CPP in 1929, and the VKP in 1930. Between 1931 and 1937, he worked in the ECCI apparatus. After December 1933, he worked in the ECCI’s OMS. On 19 June 1937, he was expelled from the VKP. On 27 June, he was fired and, soon after that, arrested. On 22 December 1937, the NKVD Special Council sentenced him to ten years in prison for “counterrevolutionary activities.” On 17 November 1945, it reduced his term to the time actually served. After his release, he left for Poland.
[xx] Fritz Ivanovich Milter (1890-1938). A member of the Bolshevik party from 1917, he worked in the ECCI apparatus between 1921 and 1937. His last job was head of the First Political Department of the ECCI’s Communications Department. After his arrest, he was expelled from the VKP, on 3 July 1937, as “an enemy of the party and the people.” On 8 January 1938, the Military Board of the Supreme Court of the USSR sentenced him to be shot.
[xxi] Aleksandr Vasilievich Smirnov. Born in 1895, he joined the RKP(b) in 1919. Between 1934 and 1937, he worked as a cipher clerk in the ECCI’s OMS. In 1937, he was arrested and repressed.
[xxii] Anna Fischer (real name – Cecylja Forterflich). Born in 1906, she joined the CPP in 1924. After October 1935, she was a technical secretary in the Secretariat of M. Moskvin. On 15 June 1937, she was fired from the ECCI apparatus and, in September 1937, arrested. On 22 December, she was sentenced to be shot.
[xxiii] Hilda Yanovna Zonberg. Born in 1893, she worked in the ECCI apparatus between 1923 and 1 December 1937. After July 1936, she was the head of Secretariat of the Cadres Department. After her arrest, she was expelled from the party on 28 November 1937, as “an enemy of the party and the people,” and later repressed.
[xxiv] Pyotr Petrovich Krustyn. Born in 1893, he joined the Bolshevik party in 1912. In 1923, he was deputy head of the Latvian section in the ECCI. Between December 1936 and December 1937, he worked in the CPLat’s delegation in the ECCI. On 8 December 1937, after his arrest, he was expelled from the party as “an enemy of the party and the people,” and later repressed.

[xxvii] Zoltan Torok (1903-1950). Between 1919 and 1921, he was a member of the CPH. After 1921, he was a member of the CPG, and after 1923, of the CPFr. He was a member of the VKP between 1924 and 1938. Between 17 June 1935 and 16 August 1936, he worked as an analyst in the ECCI’s Cadres Department. On 8 February 1938, he was arrested; on 2 June 1938, the NKVD Special Council sentenced him to ten years in prison. He was released in 1948.
[xxviii] Emil Virta. Born in 1903, he joined the CPFin in December 1925, and the VKP in 1929. Between 14 September 1934 and 16 February 1938, he worked as translator in the Finnish section of the ECCI. He was expelled from the VKP on 16 February 1938, after he had been arrested as an “enemy of the party and the people.” Repressed.
[xxix] Andrei Georgievich Sukhachev (Shefer). A member of the VKP, he worked in the ECCI’s Communications Department in 1936-1937. He was arrested and repressed.
[xxx] Vladimir Pavlvich Alekseev. Born in 1900, he joined the RKP(b) in 1919. Between July 1935 and 14 June 1937, he was an analyst on Japan in the ECCI’s Eastern Secretariat, and later worked in the Secretariat of O. Kuusinen. On 16 August 1937, he was expelled from the VKP, and later repressed.
[xxxi] Anni Genis. Born in 1903, she joined the German Komsomol in 1919, and the VKP in 1931. Between 1929 and 1937, she worked in the ECCI apparatus. After 1931, she worked as a cipher clerk in the OMS. On 6 October 1937, she was arrested; on 19 March 1938, she was sentenced to be shot.
[xxxii] Friedrich Ulreikh (real name – Edward Breslauer) (1899-1938). A member of the CPP and, in 1924-1929, of the CPG. Between 1 November 1936 and 1 June 1937, he worked in the ECCI’s Communications Department. On 20 September 1937, he was arrested. He was shot in accordance with the decision of the Collegium of the NKVD and Procurator of the USSR of 26 February 1938.
[xxxiii] Mikhail Abramovich Khazankin. Born in 1906, he joined the VKP in 1930. Between 1928 and 1937, he worked in the ECCI’s OMS. He was fired on 1 August 1937.
[xxxiv] Viktoria Rudolfovna Vilgelmson (1889-1937). A member of the RKP(b) from 1922, she worked as a translator in the ECCI apparatus between 1927 and 1 March 1937. On 22 September 1936, she was arrested; on 15 November 1937, she was sentenced to be shot and was executed that day.
[xxxv] Anton Nedelkov Volodin (real name – Antonov). Born in 1892, he was a member of the Bulgarian Social Democratic Party (T) in 1910-1919, a member of the CPBul after 1919, and a member of the VKP after 1926. Between 1935 and 19 September 1938, he was an analyst for cadres in the CPBul delegation in the ECCI. On 6 November 1938, he was arrested. On 3 April 1939, the NKVD Special Council sentenced him to eight years in prison. According to the decision of the Special Council of 26 January 1940, and his case was closed. On 29 January 1946, he left for Bulgaria.

[xxxvii] William Wheeldon was a member of the CPBG and worked in the ECCI Translation Department in the mid-1930s. He was a good translator.
